When Does a Roof Replacement Become an Opportunity for Integrated Solar?
If the roof has to come off anyway, that's the moment to look at integrated solar, because you're already paying for a new covering and the crew to install it. It makes the most sense when the roof is truly due, the main planes get good sun, and you were leaning toward solar in the first place.
When the timing works
The clearest sign is a roof at or near the end of its life. Add a plan to go solar in the next few years, main roof planes that see good sun, and enough time to plan before work has to start, and you have a strong case. It helps if you care what the finished roof looks like, because that's a big part of what you're paying for.
When it doesn't
If the roof is in good condition, leave it alone. If it has to be replaced this month because it's leaking, there usually isn't time to plan an integrated system properly. Heavy shade or a roof broken into small sections works against it. And if the structure needs real repair, that has to be dealt with first.
Your three options at reroof time
| Option | What you get | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| New conventional roof only | A new roof, no generation | You can add solar later as a separate project |
| New roof plus rack-mounted panels | A new roof with modules mounted above it | Two products and two installs to coordinate |
| Integrated solar roof | One roof that also makes power | The design follows the system you choose, and it needs planning up front |
What actually happens
- We inspect and measure the roof and take a look at your electrical service.
- You get a layout showing which areas would be active and which passive.
- You get a proposal that covers the roof and the electrical system together.
- Permits and utility paperwork are filed, as required where you live.
- The old roof covering comes off and any deck repairs are made.
- The new roof and electrical equipment go on.
- Inspection, connection and handover.
Best for
- Roofs that are due for replacement
- Homes with large, sunny roof planes
- Owners who want solar without modules sitting above the roof
May not be best for
- Roofs with plenty of life left
- Emergency replacements
- Heavily shaded sites
Questions we get asked
Should I replace a good roof just to get a solar roof?
Usually not. If the roof has years left, panels on the existing roof are normally the simpler way to add solar.
Can the old roof stay on underneath?
An integrated solar roof goes on as a new roof covering. Your installer will tell you what has to come off and what the installation instructions require.
How long does it take?
It depends on the size and shape of the roof, the weather and local permitting. Ask for a schedule with your proposal.
What will it cost?
It depends on roof size and complexity, how much of it is active, the electrical work and local requirements. Ask for a written proposal for your roof. General figures won't tell you much.
