Solar Roofing for Development and Redevelopment Projects

For a development, the question isn't whether a solar roof works on one house. It's whether it works across the scheme, at a cost and on a programme you can live with. We help you answer that early, on one representative building, before the roofing package is priced.

How we'd test feasibility with you

  1. You tell us what you're after: generation, design quality, a planning condition, or some mix.
  2. We screen your roof types for orientation, plane size and shade.
  3. We lay out one typical building and give you an indicative scope.
  4. You compare it with the alternative, a conventional roof with panels mounted on it.
  5. We check what the local authority and the utility will want to see.
  6. You decide before the roofing goes to tender.

Who has to be on board

More people than you'd think. The owner or investor needs to know what's being bought. The architect needs the panel sizes and details. The general contractor needs the sequence and lead times. The roofer and the electrician need to know where one scope stops and the other starts. And whoever ends up owning or operating the building needs to know who to call. We've set this out as a table in our developer guide.

What tends to decide it

Repetition, mostly. The same roof across many units is efficient to design and to install. After that it's timing. If the roofing is already bought, it's too late for this phase, though maybe not for the next. And it's the roofs themselves. Simple planes in good sun make a strong case. Roofs cut into small pieces don't.

Roof and solar as one scope

With an integrated roof there's one installation where there would otherwise be two. That simplifies the programme. It also means the roofing and electrical trades have to be coordinated from the start, which is the part we handle.

Tell us about the scheme

Send us the location, the number and type of buildings, where you are in design, and when roofs are due to start. A site plan and one typical roof plan are enough for a first conversation.

Questions we get asked

How early is too early?

It isn't. Before roof design is fixed is ideal.

Can it be used on part of a scheme?

Yes. Starting with the building types that suit it best is common.

Do you work with our own roofing contractor?

We can talk about that. It depends on the contractor and the project, and on training for the system.

Is this only for housing?

No. It applies to multifamily, hospitality and commercial buildings with suitable pitched roofs as well.
