Design Resources for Solar-Integrated Roofing
If you're designing a building with a solar-integrated roof, we can help in three ways: a checklist for the early design stage, the technical documents for the system we install, and a look at your roof drawings before the geometry is fixed. Send us the project and tell us where it is.
Request Technical DocumentationWhere we come in
We install integrated solar metal roofs, so we see what happens when the design reaches site. The roofs that go together easily are the ones where someone asked about panel sizes and cable routes while the roof was still a sketch. That's the conversation we'd like to have with you.
The short version of the early-design checklist
- Orientation, pitch and size of each roof plane
- Shade from trees, neighbours and the building itself
- How panels end at eaves, ridges, valleys and hips
- Where vents, flues and skylights go, and whether they can be grouped
- The route from roof to electrical equipment
Choosing a system
Judge any integrated system on five things: how it fits the architecture, how much of your roof can be active, whether the documents your jurisdiction needs exist, whether someone nearby can build it, and who is responsible once it's on. Our guide sets these out as a table you can work through.
What to send us
- Project location
- Roof plans or a model, and whether the geometry can still change
- The date the roof is scheduled
- Who is doing the roofing and electrical work, if you know
- What your building department wants to see
What you get back
A preliminary layout showing active and passive areas, the technical documents that apply to the project, and our comments on anything in the roof design that will make the install harder than it needs to be. If we think the roof isn't a good candidate, we'll say that too.
Questions we get asked
When should I contact you?
At concept or schematic design. After the roof is fixed there is much less we can improve.
Is there a charge for a project review?
Tell us about the project and we'll explain how we'd work with you on it.
Do you work outside your current install areas?
Send us the location. We'll tell you whether we can support it.
Can you help with specification language?
Yes. We can go through the roofing and electrical sections with you and point out where the two need to refer to each other.
